There are 2 10mm bolts holding the housing on. Wrecking the heads takes extreme repeated or continuous overheat conditions. Thanks for the help from the above answer. It should have some wires going to it and is a simple job. I just changed out my thermostat on my ranger today. I think the thermostat is just occasionally sticking but think i should replace before it fails completely. If the engine never warms up properly, then chances are it is the t-stat. The thermostat is wide open at around 200. It is inside the plastic housing on the block where the lower radiator hose attaches to the engine.
At 90,000 miles and never having a problem, im not surprised something is starting to go bad so I cant complain about the truck. The lower radiator hose return connects to the thermostat housing. Even when driving it after letting it warm up, it never really gets warm to the point that you have to turn the heater down. I found replacing the thermostat housing bolts was very difficult because the 10mm socket would fall out due to access angles needed to start threading them on. I only drive the truck in the winter time, and its stored in the garage pretty much all summer.
